Sunflowers reach new heights at Blackbrook
Care home residents across the country planted sunflowers as part of a national competition to grow the tallest sunflower.
Residents and the care team at Blackbrook care home in Colchester are celebrating after being crowned winner of the competition with a 10’3” sunflower grown in the home’s garden. The competition was a part of our Spring into Summer campaign, aimed to help residents make the most of the outdoors in the warmer weather.
Residents and the care team at the home diligently took care of their sunflowers and thoroughly enjoyed watching them grow from seed to flower.
Kylie Greatorex, Manager of Blackbrook care home, said:
We’re extremely proud of our sunflowers. The average sunflower is between six and 10 feet and our tallest one just passed that!
We worked especially hard to take care of the sunflowers as much as we could due to the weather conditions this summer. They look absolutely stunning in the garden and everyone is amazed by how tall they grew!
Throughout the summer, our care homes across the country engaged in a variety of garden events including birdwatching, picnics, and garden games such as croquet and boules as part of our Spring into Summer campaign. Gardening, a much-loved hobby among residents, was also a frequent activity. Whether planting flowers, fruits or vegetables, the warm weather led to many bountiful gardens.
Peggy Clements, resident of Blackbrook care home, said:
I’ve always enjoyed gardening and it’s lovely that I can continue to do this at the home. The sunflower competition was great fun, I’m thrilled to have won!
