Plastic Free July
Every July, millions of people around the world take part in Plastic Free July, a global movement that encourages individuals and organisations to reduce their single-use plastics. It prompts us all to rethink everyday habits and to be aware of the number of single-use plastics we all come into contact with every day.
What are microplastics?
Plastic doesn’t fully break down. It breaks into tiny pieces called microplastics meaning they can get into our oceans, rivers, soil and even the air we breathe. When this waste ends up in our seas and rivers it causes harm to our wildlife too.
Why it matters?
Plastic waste can last in the environment for years:
- Plastic bottles: around 450 years
- Plastic bags: 10-20 years
- Food packaging: up to 500 years
How you can help:
- Use a reusable bottle, bag or coffee cup wherever possible
- Take reusable bags when shopping to buy loose fruit and veg
- Choose products with less packaging
- When restocking your products, choose refills in place of new bottles.
What is Anchor doing?
We recently ran a session for colleagues to spread awareness about waste and recycling to ensure that waste is being disposed of correctly, which helps us to recycle as effectively as possible at our sites and offices. We are also running a live sustainability session this month for colleagues to spread further awareness about plastic and how to reduce plastic use whilst at work.
Small changes add up
Plastic Free July is a chance to build better habits. Even one change can make a difference. You don’t have to be perfect, small steps help.
