  • Earth Overshoot Day: Why it matters to you

5 August 2026

Earth Overshoot Day: Why it matters to you

Every year, Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when people have used more natural resources than the earth can regenerate in that year.

In 2026, Earth Overshoot Day fell on 30 July, meaning that by the end of July we’d used up nature's annual budget and are living beyond the planet's means for the rest of the year.

This happens because of the way we live, work and consume. Everyday activities such as wasting food, driving petrol and diesel vehicles, flying, heating our homes with fossil fuels, and manufacturing goods all require natural resources and energy. When these resources are used faster than they can be replaced, it puts increasing pressure on the environment, and limits resource access for future generations.Earth Overshoot Day: Why it matters to you

Emma Caldicott (pictured), one of Anchor’s dedicated colleague Green Champions, says:

Earth Overshoot Day is an important reminder that the choices we make every day have a real impact on the world around us. I spent time on my allotment reflecting on my own habits and appreciating the value of growing my own food in a sustainable manner.

What’s in it for me?

Earth Overshoot Day may sound like a distant global issue, but it affects all of us. The good news is that the date is not fixed. By making small changes in our daily lives, we can help reduce our impact on the planet and move Earth Overshoot Day later into the year.

Many of these actions can also help you to save money, reduce energy bills and create healthier communities.

  • Turn off lights and appliances when they are not being used.
  • Use energy-efficient LED bulbs.
  • Take shorter showers and reduce hot water use.
  • Plan meals to reduce food waste.
  • Reuse and repair items where possible instead of replacing them.
  • Walk or cycle for shorter journeys when possible.
  • Use public transport when possible.
  • Combine errands into one trip to reduce car use.
  • Grow flowers that attract bees and butterflies.
  • Get involved in community gardening projects.

Small actions make a big difference

No one person can solve the challenge of Earth Overshoot alone, but together our actions add up. For this Earth Overshoot Day, why not choose one small change and make it part of your routine? It could make a bigger difference than you think.
