Former member of the Observer Corps celebrates 100th birthday

Dorothy Marshall, resident of Anchor’s Primrose Court care home in Leeds, celebrated her 100th birthday on Monday 8 November amongst family, friends, and the care team. 

Dorothy was visited by relatives and received a telegram from the Queen, as well as gifts and cards from fellow residents. 

When asked about her special day, Dorothy said: “I felt like royalty thanks to everyone who helped me celebrate.” 

The centenarian has 10 great-grandchildren and has lived at Primrose Court care home for over four years. She was born in Grimsby and after moving to Leeds, where her parents owned a fish and chip shop, won a scholarship for Pudsey Grammar School. Following school, Dorothy worked at an insurance office. She joined the Observer Corps in 1939 and played a vital role during the war working as a Plotter. 

Dorothy married her husband Alwyn in 1945. The couple lived in Hawksworth for over 30 years and were married for 70 years. She looks back fondly on the long walks they used to take together to which she credits her enduring mobility. 

When asked her secret to a long life Dorothy said: “Don’t fight with people, it makes you age!”
