Former Commonwealth Games athletes join residents for special ceremony
Former Commonwealth Games athletes, including Britain’s first Black female Olympian joined residents at Bilton Court care home in Wellingborough to celebrate the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Sporting legend Anita Neil, Britain’s first Black female Olympian who won medals at the 1970 Commonwealth Games and 1969 European Championships visited the home alongside former high jumper, Canisus Alcindor who represented Team GB at the Commonwealth Games.
During their visit, they took part in the home’s opening ceremony, cheered on residents and colleagues as they participated in track events and a high jump event and shared some of their very own sporting memorabilia. A barbeque and medals ceremony completed the day of celebrations.
Anita said:
It was great to join the Anchor Games and meet residents and colleagues at the opening ceremony. Sport and exercise are a fantastic way to bring people together, and to keep healthy and happy in later life. I’m inspired by how passionate about sport Anchor’s residents are – they’re proof it’s never too late to embrace physical activity.
Residents of Bilton Court care home have been battling it out in their own competitions throughout July as part of the Anchor Games. Activities are tied to a theme each week - including ball games, mixed martial arts, track and field, and water sports – ensuring there is something for every resident to get involved in.
Many of our care homes are also participating in the Anchor Games and you can see what they’re up to by clicking here or searching for the #AnchorGames hashtag on our Facebook and Twitter channels. The aim of the initiative is to bring people together through sport and promote physical and mental wellbeing. Activities have been specially designed to be accessible for anyone at any age or ability.
Carley Calder, Manager of Bilton Court care home, said:

We want to thank Anita and Canisus for supporting the Anchor Games and cheering everyone on during our very own competitions!
The care team at Bilton Court care home put together an exciting lineup of activities designed to encourage physical activity including table-top games, shooting, curling, egg and spoon race, finishing with a visit from the ice cream van!
Fred Hartshorn, resident at Bilton Court care home, has been enjoying getting outside and being active as part of the initiative.
He said: “The Anchor Games have been a big hit and good fun. I especially enjoyed seeing all the sporting memorabilia. It was great to meet the athletes in real life!”
