Meet our 2025 Loving Later Life Award winners

Our Loving Later Life Awards give others the opportunity to nominate and recognise residents who have made a real difference to their community.

These annual resident awards are open to any Anchor resident and family members, neighbours, friends or colleagues are welcome to cast a vote. There are nine categories that residents can be nominated in, from being a “Knowledge Seeker” to a “Fabulous Fundraiser”. 

Each year the winners are chosen by our Resident Judging Panel and we are proud to announce the winners for each category in the 2025 Loving Later Life Awards are as follows:

Digital Dynamo – Maureen Russell – Cherry Trees, Redcar

Maureen was nominated for spearheading an initiative to secure funding for a screen in the lounge at Cherry Trees, and then working to obtain additional equipment, including a laptop. She now sets up virtual coffee mornings, a variety of exercise classes, and the Big Quiz, whilst training other residents to use the technology.

Maureen said:

I wanted to give residents something fun and meaningful to enjoy together. The screen and technology open up so many possibilities - from quizzes to exercise classes to coffee mornings. Now it’s about finding out what people love most and creating even more opportunities for us all to share.

The judges commented:

Maureen's vision and determination have transformed her community's access to technology. Her efforts to secure funding and new equipment, and train fellow residents, have opened up a world of digital possibilities for everyone at Cherry Trees.

Knowledge Seeker – Barbara Spray – St Catherines Court, Littlehampton 

Barbara was nominated for her genuine curiosity, having attended sessions across a wide range of subjects, and her willingness to share her knowledge in a way that makes others feel included and valued. Barbara has also recently taken on the role of Chair of the Residents’ Communications Group, which she has embraced with positivity and warmth. 

Barbara said:

What a lovely surprise to be nominated for, and awarded, this prize. My natural inquisitiveness seems to have taken me on a rather special journey. Thank you.

The judges commented:

Barbara's curiosity covers so many different subjects, and she has a real knack for sharing what she learns in a way that puts people at ease. Her natural leadership qualities shine through in her role as Chair, where she continues to inspire and educate her community at St Catherines Court.

Paw’some Pet - Ozwald “Ozzy” Chesterton – Chesterton Lodge care home, Newcastle-Under-Lyme

Ozzy was nominated for giving everyone a boost when they see him. Visitors ask where he is if he's not in reception, residents come down for play and cuddles, and he even has his own monthly "spot the cat" competition in the home newsletter. Staff call him their "emotional support Ozzy".

Colleagues at the home said:

As a home we are over the moon that Ozzy has won Paw-some pet. We know he is wonderful and now everyone else at Anchor can see how great he is too!

The judges commented:

Ozzy brings comfort and calm to everyone he meets. It sounds like he always seems to know when someone needs a cuddle or a bit of company and it’s clear he’s not just a pet but a much-loved member of the Chesterton Lodge community.

Greatest Grandparent- Shirley Quinn, Gillies Court, Stechford

Shirley was nominated by her daughter Jamie for the incredible support she has given her and her two young children, George (aged 6) and Pearl (aged 3). George is autistic and non-verbal, and Jamie says her mum has been by her side throughout his diagnosis and continues to be one of their greatest support systems. Both children adore their grandmother, who makes their weekly visits extra special with care, warmth, and a well-stocked supply of ice lollies.

Shirley said:

I’m over the moon about winning this award and feel so grateful to my daughter for nominating me. I love my grandchildren dearly.

The judges commented:

Shirley stood out for the meaningful support she gives her daughter and grandchildren. Her love, patience and dedication truly embody what it means to be the Greatest Grandparent.

Fabulous Fundraiser – Julie Williams, Waverley Court, Portishead

Julie was nominated for organising and supporting numerous events, including tea parties, fetes, theme days, and coffee mornings. She also goes the extra mile to make every gathering special, from collecting takeaway treats for themed evenings, to ensuring there’s always cake and sandwiches for residents to enjoy. Thanks to Julie’s creativity and commitment, funds raised have helped upgrade facilities at Waverley Court, including a new games room and IT suite.

Julie said:

Thank you, it's lovely to be recognised and appreciated. I like bringing people together, and seeing everyone at Waverley Court enjoy themselves makes all the effort worthwhile.

The judges commented:

Julie really shone through for her energy, imagination, and the personal touch she brings to every event. It’s clear she really cares about making life better for everyone at Waverley Court.

Neighbour Like No Other – Jane Sivyer - Harmer Court, Southborough

Jane was nominated for arranging get-togethers, games nights, knitting, and sewing activities for charity. A nurse by profession, Jane is always ready to lend a hand, whilst her dog Rolo has become a much-loved companion to everyone at Harmer Court. Together, they’ve brought a sense of connection and belonging to the community.

Jane said:

What a lovely surprise to find out I had won this award. I felt totally blown away and haven’t stopped smiling since.

The judges commented:

Jane has not only supported fellow residents but has also contributed to meaningful improvements, particularly in enhancing social involvement. Her warmth and commitment truly set her apart as a neighbour like no other.

Bloomin’ Marvellous Gardener – Marek Debecki - Beverley Court, Gateshead

Marek was nominated for his hard work ensuring the communal garden looks beautiful every year. From sunflowers to neatly arranged pots, Marek’s green fingers have made the gardens a joy for all who live at Beverley Court.

Marek said:

I’m really pleased to have won this award, and I’m grateful too. It means so much to me to see people enjoying the hard work I’ve put into our communal gardens.

The judges commented:

Marek has transformed the garden into a joyous, blooming space. It must be a delight for residents to sit out and enjoy the flowers. His dedication and skill shine through in every corner of the display.

Inclusive Ambassador – Pete Manser – Chasefield Close, Guildford

Pete was nominated for being the first to greet new residents, offering invitations to tea, organising coffee mornings, arranging lifts, sorting out sing-song evenings, and organising social events. He also helps maintain the communal gardens and is always ready to lend a hand, which has made him an indispensable part of the community.

The judges commented:

Pete struck us as someone who really lifts the community around him. His warmth and generosity, and the way he makes sure no one is left out, show just how much he cares about the people he lives alongside.

Sustainability Champion – Kathleen Dunn – Runnymede Court, Royton 

Kathleen was nominated for transforming her front door area, using potted plants and baskets during spring and summer. Her efforts have even inspired other residents to do the same. 

Kathleen said:

I'm extremely pleased to have won the sustainability award. I've lived in many different places during my life, and no matter where I am, my first instinct is to care for my surroundings - and there’s no better way for me personally than to plant, plant, plant. It’s great to hear that I have encouraged others to do the same.

The judges commented:

Kathleen shows how even the smallest patch can be transformed with imagination and care. By turning her view into something uplifting, she’s not only brightened her surroundings but inspired others - a wonderful example of sustainability in action.

This year's winners showcase how age is no barrier to making a difference. Highlights include a neighbour like no other who has enhanced community spirit by organising get-togethers, charity events and games nights; a beloved therapy cat spreading happiness in a care home; and a digital champion who is helping residents embrace technology to transform their community experience.

The importance of resident recognition

Our Loving Later Life Awards are a fantastic way for residents to be recognised, and to recognise others for the impact they have on the people and environment around them.

Whether it’s through being a friendly and helpful neighbour or sprucing up shared spaces, these individuals and others like them make up Anchor’s vibrant communities and make our housing locations enjoyable places to live. Our 2026 awards will open next year.
