How to become a care assistant: Qualities, qualifications and experience needed
Are you considering a career in care and not quite sure where to start? Becoming a care assistant is a fantastic first step in your career, and many entry-level roles don’t require any formal qualifications.
In this guide, we cover everything you need to know about becoming a care assistant, from qualifications and skills needed, to understanding the role, preparing your CV, and being ready for interview questions.
What is a care assistant and what do they do?
A care home assistant is someone who provides hands-on daily person-centred care for residents to help them live comfortably and independently, whether this is assisting with personal care or support during mealtimes and activities.
When you join our care team at Anchor, you’ll be working alongside colleagues who are dedicated to making a real and positive difference to older people’s lives, as this is at the heart of everything we do.
Typical daily duties of a care assistant
- Providing dignified personal care in line with a care plan
- Offering support during mealtimes and care home activities
- Helping maintain a safe and welcoming environment
- Adhering to health and safety standards
- Keeping accurate care records and reporting or documenting concerns
- Making sure all activity complies with CQC standards
When working in an Anchor care home, your role will go beyond practical support. You’ll also be a friendly face and a listening ear to those who need it most.
Understanding the role
To become a good care assistant, you need to really understand the role, and learning what your day-to-day will look like gives you a good idea of whether this is going to be the right path for you.
Familiarise yourself with the daily duties we’ve gone through above and be sure to explore our care assistant jobs at Anchor to find out more about what you’ll do, who we’re looking for and the types of shifts you could be working.
What skills do you need to be a care assistant?
What matters most to us is your passion for caring for people and making a real difference in their lives. To excel in your career as a care assistant, we look for colleagues who:
- Can work both as part of a team and independently
- Have a positive attitude and are willing to learn
- Are committed to providing high-quality, person-centred care
- Can prioritise and plan their tasks around residents needs
- Are compassionate, empathetic and approachable
Do I need qualifications?
No, qualifications aren’t a strict requirement. When working as a care assistant at Anchor, you’ll be provided with all the training and development you need to succeed in your role, including nationally recognised qualifications like NVQ’s and QCF’s.
These formal qualifications are nice to have when applying for jobs, but suitability for the role ultimately comes down to being caring, composition and approachable. These are the types of qualities employers will be looking for when hiring, rather than focusing too deeply on qualifications, as they can be achieved on the job.
Gaining valuable experience
Most of your learning will happen when you start working and gain hands-on care assistant experience. Having a base knowledge before applying will stand you in good stead, but the real skills will develop once you get stuck into your new role.
