Eric Morecambe House resident Irene celebrates her 102nd birthday
Irene Sawyer celebrated her 102nd birthday at Eric Morecambe House care home in Morecambe, surrounded by family, friends, fellow residents and colleagues, as well as some special guests.
The Mayor and Mayoress of Lancaster joined the celebrations, with Mayor Colin Hartley giving a speech in Irene’s honour and recognising her remarkable milestone.
Born in Birmingham, Irene moved to Morecambe at the age of 22 after marrying her husband, Bill. She has now called the seaside town home for more than 80 years, witnessing many changes and building a lifetime of memories along the way.
An afternoon of music and memories
The celebrations continued with afternoon tea, a buffet of cakes and treats, and glasses of prosecco raised to Irene’s birthday.
Singer Ashleigh Casson performed some of Irene’s favourite songs, soon getting everyone involved. Residents and guests sang and danced along, with some even taking the microphone to perform songs of their own.
Irene said:
I had the most wonderful day. From meeting the Mayor and Mayoress to catching up with lots of friends, it was more than I could have ever asked for. The team here always go out of their way to make us feel special.
Stephanie Braithwaite, Home Manager at Eric Morecambe House, said:
Irene is such a big part of our home, so it was lovely to see her celebrated by so many people who care about her. By the end, the whole room was singing along, and I think we’ll all be talking about it for a long time.
