Holbrook pupil builds lasting bonds with residents at St Marys care home
At St Marys care home in Holbrook, residents aren’t just welcoming visitors, they’re forming friendships.
Emily, a pupil at Holbrook Academy, has become a familiar and much-loved face at the care home after developing close relationships with residents.
Rather than one-off visits, Emily regularly spends time with residents outside of school hours, getting to know them as individuals. From these conversations and with the help of her mum and sister, Emily decided to put together a selection of thoughtfully chosen gifts for residents who do not have close family nearby. Each gift reflected a genuine understanding of the person receiving it.
Jo, who has a lifelong love of cats, received a cat-themed snow globe. Marie, known among residents for her enthusiasm for writing notes and letters, was gifted a notepad and pen. Ron, a self-confessed chocolate lover, was delighted with a box of treats, while Hazel received a cosy blanket to keep her warm.
St Marys care home is committed to building strong connections between residents and the wider Holbrook community, recognising the positive impact that these relationships can have on wellbeing. Emily’s visits are a powerful example of how small, thoughtful actions can create a sense of belonging and mutual care.
Marie J, 83, a resident at St Marys, said:
Emily's visits mean the world to us. She takes the time to really get to know each of us, and it's clear she genuinely cares. It's wonderful to see someone so young showing such kindness and consideration.
Anna Dabrowska, Home Manager at St Marys care home, added:
Emily and her family have made such a positive impact here at St Mary's. The care and thought that's gone into selecting each gift is particularly special - she has spent hours chatting with residents, learning about their hobbies, their memories, and what brings them happiness. It’s been wonderful to see the intergenerational connections formed here.
St Marys regularly welcomes visitors and encourages families, schools, and community members to be involved in the lives of residents, helping to create a home that feels rooted in the local community.
