Suffolk care home couple reflect on a marriage that has spanned decades

Betty and Leonard’s love story began at Betty’s father’s pub, the Waggon & Horses, where they first met in 1948. Their connection quickly grew and on September 30, 1950, their love culminated in a beautiful wedding at Sible Hedingham Church, marking the start of a life filled with love, laughter, and family. Today, they live at Anchor’s Canterbury House care home in Hadleigh, where they continue to enjoy their life together. 

Settling in Cavendish, their family grew with the birth of Nicola in 1951, followed by Timothy in 1954 and Lynette a year later. Amidst the joy of raising their children, Betty and Leonard also opened a pet shop - a venture that became symbolic of the love and care they poured into everything they did. 

Over the years, the pet shop remained a vital part of their lives - an embodiment of their love for each other and their desire to care for others. It was a space where their hands-on approach to life was mirrored in the way they ran their business, and it became an extension of the home they had built together.

After 11 years of building a bungalow in Cornard, Betty and Leonard moved to Sudbury Meadow Line, selling the bungalow to start afresh in a new home. For 52 years, they created a home filled with joy, laughter, and the occasional tear. They found happiness in family life, even during the toughest moments.

In October 2024, Betty and Leonard moved to Canterbury House care home in Hadleigh, where they continue to enjoy a fulfilling life together, cherishing the power of family and love - proving that with care and commitment, the best years are always ahead.
