Springfield care home transforms residents' memories into Yorkshire soap collection
Springfield care home in Bradford has partnered with the Yorkshire Soap Company to transform residents' cherished memories into a unique collection of handcrafted soaps, with fragrances inspired by their life experiences and packaging created from original resident artwork.
The project was inspired by the powerful connection between scent and memory. For people living with dementia, familiar smells can help unlock treasured memories, spark conversation and encourage reminiscence.
Residents, families and colleagues came together to share the scents that had shaped their lives. For some, it was the earthy smell of tomatoes growing in a greenhouse, freshly washed sheets drying on a washing line, or rain falling on warm garden paths. Others remembered blackberry picking at the end of summer, walks through the Yorkshire Dales, or the familiar scent of a father's pipe tobacco after a long day's work.
Those conversations inspired five specially created soaps, each designed to capture the comforting scents and memories that have stayed with residents throughout their lives.
Residents also played a leading role in creating the soap packaging. During art sessions at Springfield, they produced original paintings and illustrations inspired by the memories and scents discussed during the workshops. Designer Rebecca at Middle Mouse Design transformed their artwork into the finished packaging, while the original pieces now hang proudly in the care home's gallery.
The project came together after care assistant and award-winning blogger Shannon Palmer introduced Springfield to the Yorkshire Soap Company, bringing together residents, local businesses and creative partners to turn the idea into reality.
The soap collection launched at the Yorkshire Soap Company's Piece Hall store in Halifax and is available through the company's online shop and directly from Springfield care home.
Noeline, resident at Springfield care home, said:
When we started talking about smells and memories, it brought so much back. The garden soap takes me straight to Sunday mornings, pottering outside in the fresh air. Being part of the art sessions was something special too. To sit together, to make something, to see it all come together as something real that people can hold in their hands and take home. It has been a wonderful thing to be part of.
Vicki Hemsworth, Manager at Springfield care home, said:
This project started as a conversation and grew into something that involved the whole community, from residents and families to local businesses and creative partners across Yorkshire. We couldn't have done it without our care assistant and award-winning blogger Shannon, who made the connection that started it all, or without Marcus and the team at the Yorkshire Soap Company. The soaps are beautiful, and so is everything that went into making them. We look forward to creating many more opportunities like this for our residents in the future.
Marcus Doyle, Owner of the Yorkshire Soap Company, said:
I lost my dad four years ago to dementia, so I understand the challenges families face. I was incredibly fortunate that he was able to be cared for at home right through to the end, but not everyone has that level of support. That's why places like Springfield care home are so important. This has been a wonderful project to be part of, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how the initiative develops and the difference it will make to residents' daily lives.
