Sandholme Fold celebrates World Book Day with intergenerational event
Sandholme Fold care home in Halifax marked World Book Day by inviting children from a local nursery into the care home for a special intergenerational afternoon centred around storytelling.
The care home welcomed children from Early Years at Lightcliff, who visited to take part in a range of activities. Residents sat down to book-themed tables for a dinner service, whilst the children danced and walked down a red carpet to music and lights. Residents then voted for their favourite costume, with first, second, and third place awarded on the day, before the children and residents came together to share happy book memories.
Throughout the visit, residents spoke about the books they remember from their childhood and the stories that stayed with them over the years. In return, the children shared some of the books and characters they enjoy today, sparking conversations about how reading - and childhood itself - has changed over time.
For many residents, the afternoon was a chance to reflect on personal memories linked to reading, family and school, whilst the children enjoyed hearing first-hand stories and experiences, brought to life beyond the nursery.
Lilly, resident at Sandholme Fold care home, said:
I’ve always liked dressing up and joining in the show, it was wonderful. It brought joy to my day seeing the young children dance in their costumes.
Iain Winstanley, Wellness Co-ordinator at Sandholme Fold care home, said:
World Book Day felt like the perfect opportunity to open our doors and welcome the local community in, and we were so pleased with how the day came together. It was wonderful to see residents and children spending time with one another and enjoying the activities side by side. We look forward to creating many more intergenerational moments like these in the future.
