Happy birthday Joyce – you’re sew special
Resident receives unique gift from crafty colleague
A colleague at Nelson Lodge care home started sewing with residents during lockdown to bring people together. Even though lockdown has been lifted, Rachel still meets with residents to sew and have a chat over a cup of tea or glass of wine. Now, they even have their own room and a special sewing machine. Outside of the gatherings, Rachel works hard to mend residents’ clothing and sew personalised gifts she knows they will love.
During their meetings, residents recall memories of them sewing with family members in earlier years. Learning how to sew is often a skill passed down through generations, and Rachel was taught to sew by her mum.
Joyce is one resident who regularly attends the sewing room to enjoy a chat over a cup of tea or glass of wine. For her birthday, Rachel crafted a personalised cushion with the number "90" embroidered on it. On creating personalised gifts for Joyce and other residents, Rachel said:
I enjoy making person-centred gifts and felt with this lady celebrating her 90th birthday and her continued attendance to not only sewing days but other events.
Everyone here at Anchor hopes Joyce had a very happy birthday and more happy memories in the sewing room with other residents and colleagues. At Anchor, you can trust us to ensure residents have lovely birthdays and receive thoughtful gifts.
