Skelton Court care home remembers and celebrates 81st anniversary of VE Day

Residents and colleagues at Skelton Court care home in Skelton-in-Cleveland have come together in celebration to mark the 81st anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day honouring the courage, resilience, and stories of those who lived through the Second World War.  

To commemorate the occasion, the home has hosted a series of events for both residents and colleagues to enjoy together. In the week leading up to VE Day, they baked up a storm, including making a delicious date and walnut slice using a wartime recipe. 

On the day itself, they celebrated with 1940s music and memorabilia, giving residents the opportunity to share their recollections of such an important period of our history and honour those who served. The home welcomed entertainer Janie St John who dressed up in her service outfit and sang wartime classic songs that kept Britain moving including Dame Vera Lynn’s, We’ll Meet Again and White Cliffs of Dover. 

As a Veteran Friendly Framework (VFF) accredited home, in recognition of its commitment to supporting the wellbeing of residents who have served in the armed forces, these celebrations are incredibly important to those at Skelton Court. As well as ensuring veterans’ experiences and needs are thoroughly reflected in their care and support plans day-in-day-out, later in the year, Skelton Court will be running events in honour of Armed Forces Day and the anniversary of D-Day.
