Residents share their memories for museum exhibition

Skelton Court care home in Skelton-in-Cleveland has joined forces with the Kirkleatham Museum to support a new exhibition. 

The museum visited Skelton Court care home to work with residents on reminiscence as part of a new exhibition which celebrates all that is special about the coastal area. Called Lemon Tops and Lobster Pots, the project features stories collected from people who live in the communities, with a special focus on the fishing community, seaside experiences, the unique landscape and the role of the lifeboat service. Items from the museum’s archives are also included.  

Residents from Skelton Court care home were thrilled to see the exhibition firsthand during a recent visit to the museum. 

When asked about their experience, Peter McKay, resident at Skelton Court care home, said:

It was great fun to see the exhibition come to life. We’re all so happy to be a part of it.

The team at Kirkleatham Museum have thoroughly enjoyed the project and spending time with Skelton Court residents listening to their memories of the seaside. They are continuing their work with the residents and have already started the next stage of the project. The finished work will be displayed at the museum and then passed on to the home to keep and showcase.

It’s been fantastic working with the Kirkleatham Museum and having them support our residents to be creative while participating in reminiscence. These kinds of activities really help to keep our residents engaged while creating meaningful experiences which enhance their wellbeing and connection to each other.

Lemon Tops and Lobster Pots is open until mid-October.
