Mayflower Court care home couple share their love story

The love story of Cilla and Ray spans an incredible 59 years, having first crossed paths as young adults in the 1960s. Now, in the comfort of Mayflower Court care home, they continue to enjoy each other’s company, cherishing the bond that began all those years ago. 

Cilla was just 16 years old when she first met Ray at Bitterne Grammar School. A reserved, quiet teenager, she had no way of knowing that her chance encounter with Ray, an older, charming boy with a guitar case in hand, would mark the beginning of a lifelong journey.

Their first meeting was followed by a fortuitous moment at a local dance. Ray was performing as part of a three-person band, and Cilla had caught his eye. During a break in their performance, Ray mustered the courage to ask Cilla to dance. It wasn’t a slow waltz, but a lively, upbeat number, and at the end of the evening, Ray offered to drive Cilla home – an invitation that would spark nearly six decades of love and shared memories. 

When Ray graduated from school, he chose an adventurous path, touring Germany with his band for a year. Cilla, ever patient, waited, and when Ray returned, it was as if no time had passed. They soon married, and over the years, raised two children. In time, their children had children of their own. For Cilla, the legacy of each generation building upon the accomplishments of the last has always been a source of great pride and fulfilment.

This year, Cilla and Ray will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary at Mayflower Court care home. Their story continues to unfold, filled with moments of connection, laughter, and the simple joys of sharing life with someone you love.
