The Manor House Knaresborough care home hosts sustainable fashion show
The Manor House Knaresborough care home opened its doors for a spectacular fashion show, which brought together residents and the local community to celebrate creativity.
Residents took to the catwalk alongside performers from Studio 3 Dance, who closed the afternoon with a special performance. Even The Manor House's therapy dog, Bailey, made a surprise catwalk appearance, inevitably stealing the show.
Every outfit in the show was one-of-a-kind, made from donated clothing collected at a jumble sale. Costume designer Amy Critchley took each piece of clothing apart and rebuilt it into something entirely new, drawing inspiration from The Great British Sewing Bee.
The show received support from Orsola de Castro, Co-Founder of Fashion Revolution and a leading voice in sustainable fashion, who shared a special video message with guests. In it, she highlighted the importance of rethinking how we value clothing and encouraged conversations around more conscious fashion choices.
The event also shone a light on the residents themselves - a generation that grew up mending what was worn, looking after their belongings, and making things last. Their experiences offer an important reminder of the value of slowing down and rethinking how we consume today.
Maureen, resident at The Manor House Knaresborough, said:
Everyone at The Manor House Knaresborough put on such a wonderful afternoon for us. It’s not every day you get to walk down a catwalk! The clothes were just beautiful, and it was amazing to see how they had been made from things people had donated. It brought back a lot of memories for me, as we used to mend and reuse everything when I was younger. It felt special to share that with everyone and to see people enjoying it together.
Orsola de Castro, Co-Founder of Fashion Revolution, said:
After so many years of fashion activism, I have come to the conclusion that if we really want to help the planet and make a positive change, we can do so, one piece of clothing at a time, starting from our wardrobe. Remember, loved clothes last.
Klara Spatenkova, Home Manager, said:
It was such a lovely and uplifting event for everyone involved. Seeing our residents take to the catwalk with such confidence was wonderful. They were the true influencers of the day, representing a generation that grew up with a ‘make do and mend’ mindset. There is so much we can learn from their approach to valuing what we have and making things last. This event was a celebration of that, as well as a chance to bring the community together and have some fun.
