Former firefighter Edwin surprised with special visit ahead of 100th birthday

A former firefighter from Otley was recently treated to a special surprise at Wharfeside care home, where he has lived for almost three years.

Edwin Webster, who will celebrate his 100th birthday later this year, spent nearly 27 years as a retained firefighter. To mark the occasion, the team arranged a visit from a fire engine at Otley Fire Station - something Edwin had no idea was planned.

When the engine arrived outside the home, Edwin was delighted to be welcomed aboard by firefighters Warren Utley, Leo Johnson and Harry Grimes. The crew showed him the modern equipment and invited him to try on their kit.

One feature in particular stood out - an in-built kettle - prompting Edwin to joke: “I wish I could turn back the clock!”

The visit brought back many memories for Edwin, who served during the construction of Otley Fire Station in 1958. He shared stories from his time there, when the station had 19 firefighters and two engines. The moment was made even more meaningful as Edwin had worked alongside Warren Utley’s father, Ken, a former sub-officer at the station.

Louise Bulcock, Manager at Wharfeside care home, said:

Edwin has always spoken so proudly about his time in the fire service, so being able to surprise him in this way as he approaches his 100th birthday was incredibly special. It was wonderful to see the amazement on his face when he realised the engine was there to visit him!

As the crew prepared to leave, with lights flashing, Edwin summed up the day perfectly:
“I would consider this a success!”
