Resident artwork set to feature in our 2023 wall calendar
To celebrate National Day of Arts in Care Homes on 24 September, our care homes had the opportunity to take part in our art competition
Residents of Bilton Court care home and Dearne Hall care home were among the winners of our competition. Dearne Hall created a collage of their memorial garden where colleagues and residents can relax and reflect and Bilton Court created a lively collage of colourful flowers set within a vase. Both pieces will be featured in a 2023 wall calendar and on an online gallery.
Residents of The Manor House in Harrogate and Rita Lynch, a resident at Greenhive in Peckham were also competition winners. Residents of The Manor House created a painting of poppies against a grey sky with hot air balloons and the outline of a person, and Rita Lynch produced a series of paintings of flowers in vases.
National Day of Arts in Care Homes is an annual event which aims to champion, promote, and encourage arts in care settings. Care teams from our care homes organised a variety of activities for the national celebration day, including art-themed quizzes, exhibitions, and music sessions. Residents have also been creating original artworks with the theme of ‘Field of Flowers’ to enter the competition which was judged by a panel of colleagues.
On winning, Teresa Selby, resident of Dearne Hall care home, said:
I’ve always liked the arts and feel very flattered that our artwork was chosen to be part of the Anchor calendar. I enjoy art because it helps me see things in different ways and express myself creatively.
Asa Johnson, Service Improvement Manager, said:
We’re so happy to take part in National Day of Arts in Care Homes as it builds on many of the creative activities we already hold in our care homes across the country. The competition and calendar are both great ways for us to showcase the talents of our residents.
Art is fantastic for boosting wellbeing in people living in later life by facilitating creativity and providing a special way to express ideas and emotions.
Arts are a central part of the activity programmes across our care homes. Whether it’s a painting session, crafting activity, live music performance or dance class, residents can try new forms of art or hone their artistic talents throughout the year.
