New initiative brings generations together
The Manor House care home in Knaresborough has launched a children’s group called Tiny Tots and Teacups to help combat loneliness and foster relationships between children and older people.
Parents are invited to bring their babies and toddlers to the home to interact with residents. Toys and sensory items will be provided as well as refreshments.
Katie Pickering, Activities Co-Ordinator at The Manor House care home, came up with the idea for the children’s group when speaking with a friend about the benefits of taking her children to visit their grandparents.
She explained:
My friend was telling me how much visits between her children and their grandparents’ positively influence their mental wellbeing and I got the idea. I think it’ll be nice for the parents as well. Loneliness can affect people from all generations including new parents.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, we held a lot of intergenerational events for our residents, and we’re thrilled to be starting to do this again. Older people and children both really benefit from intergenerational relationships. It’s a great way to tackle loneliness, create empathy and strengthen community bonds.
The idea for the initiative received an enormously positive response when Katie posted on Facebook asking if anyone would be interested in attending. After a successful first session, the care team arranged a second which was held on Thursday 14 July.
Residents such as Ena Chapman, 93, really enjoyed the group.
She said:
Interacting with younger generations always boosts my mood, they have so much energy!
