Anchor's response to the Autumn Statement 2023
Anchor's Chief Executive, Sarah Jones comments on today’s Autumn Statement made by the Chancellor of the Exchequer in which several measures to get more people into the workforce were outlined.
In response to what was outlined today, Sarah says:
We are encouraged to see employment prioritised in the Autumn Statement. It’s important that such efforts also recognise the enormous value and potential of supporting older people who want to be in the workforce to be able to continue to contribute.
Research from think-tank Demos, supported by Anchor, reveals the UK economy could unlock £6.6bn a year by returning to pre-pandemic levels of later life workers.
Amidst the cost-of-living crisis, rising inflation and skills shortages, government must act now. Removing barriers to later life working can futureproof our economy while supporting later life workers to re-enter or remain in work for as long as they choose.
As an Age-friendly Employer, we see first-hand the benefits of later life working and the invaluable skills and experiences older workers bring. We’re calling on government to do more to recognise their contribution, and we’re urging other businesses to sign the Age-friendly Employer Pledge to help make workplaces more inclusive.
Find out more about the research mentioned above in Platinum Pound, a new report by Demos and supported by us, which highlights the need for policies that empower and enable older workers to continue contributing should they choose to do so.
