Larchfield care home triumphs in annual Christmas cake competition

Residents from Larchfield care home in West Yorkshire have emerged victorious in a Christmas cake making competition.

The residents joined forces to make the best decorated Christmas cake, going up against other Anchor care homes across the region. 
 
Larchfield care home’s best cake decorators carefully decorated a traditional Christmas Cake in a suitably festive manner. The competition was hosted at Oak tree lodge care home with other nearby Anchor care homes coming along with their cakes as well. 
 
A team of Anchor colleagues and Lord Mayor of Leeds, Al Garthwaite then picked the best Christmas cake based on taste, presentation and resident involvement. In the end, they all agreed that Larchfield care home’s residents had made the best of all the cakes, with Beech Hall and Oak Tree Lodge taking second and third place. 
 
Larchfield care home were overjoyed by their win. For having the best cake, the home took back a trophy and some delicious chocolates! Ruth Lee, was overjoyed at winning the competition, saying:

I’m a big fan of Christmas cake decorating and making so I was really excited when I heard there was a Christmas cake competition. I never thought we’d win though, it’s absolutely brilliant!

I’ve always enjoyed decorating cakes, almost as much as I enjoy eating them! I really enjoy the baking sessions at Larchfield, so it was a really nice way to get into the holiday spirit.

Anita Goodfellow, Manager of Larchfield care home, said:

Activities such as baking, and cake decorating are a firm favourite among our residents at Larchfield care home. We’re all delighted that our cake won this year’s Christmas cake competition. We have some really talented bakers and decorators here! Thank you to Oak tree lodge care home for hosting us and congratulations to second and third place care homes too!

It is nice to have this competition as a way of boosting the Christmas spirit. While the cake decorating is an important part of our festivities, we’re also looking forward to celebrating Christmas with children from LB Academy singing, art and crafts and a Christmas party.
