Hatton Grange care home celebrates three special milestone birthdays
Hatton Grange care home in Hyde, Manchester recently marked three landmark birthdays, as residents Irene Moore, Blanche Harrisson and Margaret Wood each reached incredible milestones. Irene celebrated her 100th birthday, Blanche marked her 103rd, and Margaret turned 104.
Each lady’s birthday was celebrated individually, but the home also held a joint event which was attended by family and friends, as well as the Mayor of Tameside, Shibley Alam.
Irene grew up in Manchester and began working at the age of 14 in a glove factory. Some of her happiest memories were of Sunday afternoons spent in Hyde Park listening to brass bands, and of attending Sunday school every week with her family. Irene was also delighted to receive a card from the King on her 100th birthday.
Blanche, who turned 103, also began working at a young age in a slipper factory. At 18, she was called up to help the war effort, first in an aircraft munitions factory, and later training as a welder in Barrow-in-Furness. One of her fondest memories was of going dancing in Morecambe as a teenager, where she met a gentleman with striking blue eyes who would later become her husband. After years of exchanging letters whilst he served in the war, he returned home and proposed.
Margaret, who turned 104, grew up in Manchester and credits her long and healthy life to her love of cycling. She recalled riding her bicycle everywhere, even when the roads were little more than dirt tracks. Margaret later worked as a shorthand typist.
The joint celebration was a memorable occasion, honouring not just the ladies’ remarkable ages, but the rich stories of their lives which they continue to share at Hatton Grange.
Irene said:
Reaching 100 feels very special. I really enjoyed the celebration. It was such a happy day with everyone together, and it meant a lot to share it with friends and family here at Hatton Grange.
Angela Brown, Home Manager at Hatton Grange, said:
It was a privilege to celebrate such extraordinary birthdays with Irene, Blanche and Margaret. They are truly inspirational women with so many life stories to share, and the whole Hatton Grange community felt honoured to be part of their special moments.
