Victoria Court celebrates iconic women throughout history
Victoria Court care home in Ilkeston marked International Women’s Day [IWD] by spending the day celebrating the countless achievements of trail blazing women.
Residents spent the day portraying women such as Queen Victoria and Emmeline Pankhurst, who shaped history during a pageant on Wednesday 8 March.
Everyone along to enjoy the pageant, learn some fun historical facts and joined in with discussions about inspirational women they have met and that are in their lives. Dorothy Harrison was very excited to portray Queen Victoria.
She said:
I liked dressing up and being Queen Victoria, it was good fun, and I learned a lot about her for the role! For instance, I found out that, when she married her German cousin, Prince Albert, they regularly spoke German together, they even argued in German when in private! It was quite fun being a queen for the afternoon, not everybody gets that chance!
I really enjoyed portraying such a wonderful woman and it was an honour to represent such a great lady. It was wonderful that we could celebrate so many important figures like her today!
Lisa Cox, Manager of Victoria Court, said,
Following a brief rehearsal, residents read out short life stories of famous iconic women, that had been researched and written. The event was an empowering experience and clearly boosted their confidence and self-esteem. It was a truly inspiring event, and it was lovely how keen they were to pitch in and give it a go! We all learned a lot today.
