Animal loving resident holds collection for charity
Ahead of International Dog Day, Gill Storey, a resident of The Manor House in Barnard Castle, will be collecting donations for homeless dogs in Romania.
Gill is asking for donations of important items to support dog shelters in Romania including dog food, treats, collars and harnesses. The donations will go to two charities based in Brasov, Romania dedicated to helping street dogs - Gabriela’s Souls and Paws and ODD (Old, Damaged and Disabled) Animal Rescue.
A lifelong dog lover, Gill decided she wanted to help dogs stay safe and healthy after reading about stray dogs in need. She started the collection ahead of International Dog Day to bring awareness to the cause and honour her favourite four-legged friend.
International Dog Day is celebrated annually on 26 August and was created so that all breeds of dogs are celebrated. The day also helps members of the public learn about the number of dogs that must be rescued every year while paying tribute to man’s best friend.
Gill said:
I’ve loved dogs for as long as I can remember. I hope my collection will help dogs in need. There is a big problem with street dogs in Romania so every bit counts. Please do donate if you can!
Throughout her life, Gill has had six dogs, two budgies and cats. Her budgie Robbie currently lives with her at The Manor House care home and was named our Pet of the Month in March. Gill had a Labrador, her favourite dog breed, named Bramble when she was younger. She has also worked with animals in the past including at a boarding kennel for dogs.
We believe in the power of animals in boosting residents’ wellbeing, and so we have a pet friendly policy in place so that residents can bring their beloved pets such as Robbie the budgie to live with them.
Sharon Harrison, Manager of The Manor House Barnard Castle care home, said:
Gill has such a passion for animals, it’s really wonderful. We’re thrilled to support her collection of items to help dogs in need. If anyone from the community would like to donate, they can bring items to The Manor House and Gill will get the items to these important charities.
Donations for Gill’s collection can be brought to the blue box at reception at The Manor House care home, John St, Barnard Castle, DL12 8HR.
