Penrith’s Eden Court celebrates its 40th anniversary
The 40th anniversary of Eden Court housing location in Penrith, Cumbria was marked with a buffet and celebratory drinks on Wednesday 7 August. Residents, colleagues and members of the local community all came together to celebrate the occasion.
Anchor’s Eden Court was opened on 10 August 1984 by The Viscount Whitelaw.
Before becoming Eden Court, the site was home to a hostel for internees and people living with a disability in 1939.
In 1940, it become a hostel for the Women’s Land Army. One of these women, Zara Armstrong, still lives in the area today.
The building was demolished in 1982 paving the way for Eden Court. It initially opened as sheltered housing accommodation for those over the age of 60.
Christine Palmer, Location Manager for Anchor’s Eden Court, said:
We can’t believe it’s been 40 years since we opened. We are proud of the wonderful community we have here.
The staff have worked hard to create a fun, enabling environment for our residents. This would not have been possible without everyone at Eden Court pulling together.
Among those who attended the celebrations on Wednesday was Kathleen Potter, who has been a housekeeper at Eden Court for the entire 40 years.
Kathleen said:
I really enjoyed celebrating the anniversary. It was a lot of fun, and nice to think back on all that’s happened in those years!
I remember when I first started in my role here - it just seems like yesterday! I suppose time does go quickly when you’re having fun.
