Anchor Games extravaganza in The Wirral

Six care homes based in and around The Wirral competed in a multi-sport event ahead of the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The event is part of our Anchor Games initiative, aiming to bring people together through sports.

The games were held on the 12 July at The Oval Leisure Centre in The Wirral. The location was chosen as it is where scenes from British historical sport drama Chariots of Fire were filmed. As colleagues competed in the final race of the day, the iconic theme tune from the film played from the stands.  

The event was a great way for residents and colleagues to be physically and mentally active while having fun and socialising. Activities included firm favourites such as a frisbee throwing competition, egg and spoon race, and bean bag shot competition. There was an event for any ability, so everyone was able to get involved. British former professional boxer John H Stracey and The Mayor of the Wirral Councillor Jeff Green also attended to cheer on competing residents and colleagues.

Throughout July many of our care homes will be running their own sporting events for the Anchor Games. In the lead up to the Commonwealth Games, residents will also be able to enjoy food tasting events featuring traditional dishes from the Commonwealth countries and reminisce sessions where residents can unite in shared memories of sport.
