Marking the 75th anniversary of VE Day

8 May 2020 saw the 75th anniversary of VE Day, an international celebration of the arrival of peace in Europe. As an opportunity to reminisce and reflect, VE Day is always an important moment for Anchor Hanover’s residents and colleagues and this year we were even more determined help people living in later life celebrate this special anniversary.

The manager at Wold View in Brough, East Yorkshire has been distributing sunflower seeds along with VE Day Activity Packs to all the residents. “We are planting these seeds as an act of remembrance, and look forward to seeing who wins the tallest sunflower competition as they grow”.

A special VE Day afternoon tea was held in the garden for residents at Dawson Lodge care home in Southampton on Friday to mark the occasion.

The team at Sunnyfield in Ripon have enjoyed working with night staff from North Yorkshire County Council to create activity packs and decorate the Extra Care retirement apartments for residents.

Resources to help you commemorate VE Day from your home

The Royal British Legion planned a range of remote activities to enable people to commemorate and celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE Day on 8 May 2020.

The Legion’s website have a host of different resources that you could use, as well as further information on how to get involved www.rbl.org.uk/veday75.

The National Memorial Arboretum have a special online exhibition, learning materials for all ages and even a VE Day 75th Anniversary tour, all available on their website.
