  • The importance of personalised dementia care

12 May 2025

The importance of personalised dementia care

Asa Johnson, our Service Improvement Manager has shared his expert view on personalised dementia care in a featured article on the Care Choices website.

Asa JohnsonAsa leads Anchor's national service improvement team and explains why tailored care is essential for people living with dementia.

The article highlights how personalised dementia care - built around each person's history, preferences, and needs - improves emotional wellbeing, supports independence, and helps reduce anxiety.

Asa outlines how Anchor's care homes deliver this approach through meaningful activities, familiar environments, and compassionate, well-trained teams. Highlighting how our care homes across the country each focus on creating safe, supportive spaces where residents can continue doing the things they love.

Asa says:

The best dementia care comes from well-trained and compassionate colleagues. Our teams aim to understand not just the medical side of dementia but also how to communicate effectively and respond to behavioural changes with patience and empathy.

Starting positive conversations about dementia

At Anchor we recognise that as a nation, we are remarkably reluctant to think and talk about dementia. Nearly half of us have never had a conversation with loved ones about it, and our research shows that we’d much rather discuss divorce, break ups and our weight, than dementia. A staggering one in three of us simply don’t want to talk about dementia. Yet we all want what’s best for our loved one in later life.

Alongside information about our dementia care services, we’ve also developed our free Reframing Dementia Guide to help people understand what dementia is, how it can be managed and how we can talk about it in a way that’s positive and forward-looking.
