Anchor celebrates award win for Year of Musical Expression
Anchor is celebrating the outstanding achievement of Asa Johnson, Service Improvement Manager, who has been recognised with the Year of Musical Expression Award at the National Activity Awards.
This national honour from the National Activity Providers Association reflects the creativity, dedication and meaningful impact Asa and Anchor’s team have brought to enhancing residents’ wellbeing through music across Anchor’s care services.
Throughout the Year of Musical Expression, Asa initiated a wide-ranging programme of musical activity designed to inspire connection, spark joy, and support emotional and cognitive wellbeing. The approach wove music into daily life across Anchor’s homes, from intergenerational playlists and themed events to Zest tea dances and the much-loved Anchor’s Got Talent celebrations. Residents enjoyed opportunities to reminisce, relax, express themselves and take part in shared experiences that strengthened community bonds.
A particular focus of the work centred on the power of personalised music. Playlists curated around residents’ favourite artists and memories played a vital role in bringing comfort, evoking emotion and supporting people living with dementia. Homes also marked cultural moments through music, including VE Day commemorations, Eurovision celebrations, Arts in Care Day, and other meaningful events throughout the year. This consistency and creativity helped build momentum across services and encouraged colleagues to adopt music as an integral part of person-centred care.
Asa’s leadership has shaped not only the success of the Year of Musical Expression but also the foundations for future campaigns. His work has influenced Anchor’s planning for the forthcoming Year of Culture, where music will continue to play a central role in building wellbeing, community connection and joyful shared experiences.
Asa said:
I’m incredibly honoured to receive this award on behalf of Anchor.
Music is a universal language. It reaches people in ways words often can’t — unlocking memories, emotions and connections that enrich everyday life. This year has shown just how powerful music can be in bringing people together, and I’m so proud of our residents and colleagues who embraced the Year of Musical Expression with such enthusiasm and heart.
We understand that the activities people carry out in their free time are often the things that they most look forward to and enjoy. Our hobbies and interests are individual to us, they shape the person we are and help to paint a picture of the way we like to live our lives.
