What is a smart meter?
A smart meter can help make things simpler at home. It sends your gas and electricity readings directly to your energy supplier, so you don’t have to do it yourself. This means your bills will be more accurate and based on the energy you’ve used – not just an estimate.
If you want to, you can also use the smart meter display to see if you’re using more energy than usual. For example, you might see your energy use rise when using a certain appliance. You also don’t need internet access to have a smart meter.
Contact your energy supplier and they will be able to tell you whether you can have a smart meter. If not, they may be able to tell you when one can be installed. You can find the contact details for your provider on your energy bill.
