Asbestos safety – what you need to know
Some homes built before the year 2000 may contain asbestos. This was a common building material used for insulation and fire protection. When left alone and in good condition, asbestos is usually safe. Problems only arise if it is damaged or disturbed.
Asbestos can be present in places such as:
- Ceiling or wall panels
- Pipe or boiler insulation
- Floor tiles or backing
- Garage or shed roofs
- Textured coatings (for example, older “Artex” finishes)
You can’t see asbestos fibres with the naked eye, and you can’t tell by looking whether a material contains asbestos.
How to stay safe
- Do not drill, sand, cut, or remove any materials you think may contain asbestos.
- Report damage (cracks, breaks, loose panels) to your location manager as soon as possible.
- Avoid DIY work that could disturb walls, ceilings or floors unless you have approval from Anchor.
If you have any concerns about asbestos, please talk to your location manager and they can escalate your concerns to a member of our asbestos team to offer guidance. Likewise, if you would like permission to carry out work please speak to your location manager.
Any accidental damage to known or presumed asbestos should be reported immediately to your location manager or Anchor On-Call if out of hours.
