Wetherby Manor care home couples celebrate Valentine’s day in style

Two couples from Wetherby Manor care home celebrated Valentine’s day in style - complete with a gourmet breakfast and taking part in a variety of Valentine’s day activities with other residents.

Clive and Joan Dickinson, and Rita and Arnold Bradbury were treated to a luxury breakfast by the team at Anchor’s Wetherby Manor care home on St James’s Street. Along with a glass of champagne the couples enjoyed croissants, fresh fruit, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs while both ladies were given a bouquet of red roses by the care home team.

Following their breakfast, the couples then enjoyed some dancing and singalongs and took part in a Valentine’s quiz along with other Wetherby Manor residents. 

Rita and Arnold, who have been married for 73 years, said the secret to their marriage was to always be prepared to compromise and respect your partner’s wishes, helped by the fact that they’ve never argued once in all their married years!

Clive and Joan, who went on their first date on Valentine’s day 1947 and married in 1951, were very touched by the special celebrations. Joan said: 

Valentine’s day has always been a bit special for us, and it’s really lovely we can continue to celebrate it together like this. It took Clive ages to pluck up the courage to ask me out but once he did, we didn’t look back! For us the secret to staying married this long is to share common interests and talk to each other. You’ve got to work on these things to make them last.

We had so much fun organising activities for all our residents, especially Clive, Joan, Rita and Arnold! After so many years together it’s wonderful to see first-hand how they all still love each other and enjoy romantic events like Valentine’s day!
