Trinity Lodge care home hosts 4 day event to celebrate VE Day
Residents and colleagues at Trinity Lodge care home in Coventry came together for four days of commemorative celebrations to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day.
From 5th to 8th May, the care home transformed into a hub of 1940s nostalgia, honouring the extraordinary service of its residents and paying tribute to all those who fought for our country during World War II.
The packed programme included live performances from 1940s singers, traditional wartime food, and staff dressed in authentic 1940s clothing. The highlight was an indoor street party complete with bunting, music, and community spirit reminiscent of the original celebrations eight decades ago.
Emma Thomas, Deputy Manager, said:
At Trinity Lodge, we’re proud to care for many residents who either served or lived through the war, and it’s a privilege to honour their stories and sacrifices. This anniversary held great significance for many of our residents who lived through those historic days. We planned this extended celebration not only as a tribute to their experiences but as an opportunity for residents, colleagues, and guests to come together and keep these important memories alive.
Among those who enjoyed the celebrations were married couple Ken and Margaret, who have vivid memories of VE Day 80 years ago.
I remember jumping for joy when we heard the news, recalled Margaret. There was this overwhelming sense of relief that swept through everyone. After years of rationing, blackouts, and constant worry, we finally had something wonderful to celebrate.
Ken, who was drafted to Berlin for two years at age 18 as a dispatch rider, added:
I delivered mail to different units across Berlin on a motorbike or jeep. I felt very proud of myself at the time and oddly enough, wasn't fearful. Being part of the effort to rebuild after such devastation gave us all purpose. These celebrations brought back so many memories of that extraordinary time.
Rob Martin, Managing Director of Care Services, said:
VE Day celebrations are incredibly important to all of us at Anchor, not only to commemorate such a historic moment but also to honour the personal experiences of our residents who lived through those times.
We understand the importance of creating meaningful activities that connect our residents with their memories and celebrate their contributions. The stories shared by residents like Ken and Margaret are precious living history, and we're privileged to help keep these memories alive.
With an increasing number of our care homes, including Trinity Lodge care home, proudly accredited with Veteran Friendly Framework status, we are committed to providing environments where those who have served are recognised, respected and feel fully supported.
The VE Day celebrations are just one way Anchor supports veteran residents, ensuring those who have served in the armed forces have the care they need. Anchor’s partnership with the Royal British Legion, and its 23 homes with Veteran Friendly Framework status, are helping to provide better access to care and support for veterans.
