Linwood resident says that listening is the secret to a long lasting relationship

A resident from Linwood care home has offered romantic advice to young couples celebrating Valentine’s Day this week.

John Trotter, who was married to wife Jean for 61 years until she passed away, said the secret to their marriage was to always listen to each other and work together to make the marriage work.

Great grandfather John, 94, who has lived at Anchor’s Linwood care home in Mercer Close since 2018, said: “Jean and I met at school at the age 10. She was the light of my life. Ours was a typical love story.
“Our most romantic day was our wedding day and after that every day was special. 

“It’s important to remember that a marriage is a partnership and that both of you have to work at it.
“Valentine’s Day is a chance to show you care for someone you love and we are still in love after 61 years of marriage.”

John, who married Jean at Hamptons St Mary’s Church, has three children, six grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

He will be joining his friends at Linwood for a Valentine’s meal while being entertained by singer Jimmy Kent on Friday (14 February).
Linwood Manager Eva Trochim said the Valentine’s party was part of a packed programme of activities at the care home.

She said: “This is such an exciting event. There will be lots of fun, colour and wonderful food all made from fresh seasonal ingredients. Older people have a life time of experience when it comes to love so it’s great John can offer younger couples advice.

“The party is part of Linwood ongoing programme of interesting activities which aim to stimulate the residents physically and mentally.
“Such events are also a great occasion for residents to socialise with friends and their families.”
