Finding new friendships at Hampshire Lakes
After 30 years living in Cheshire, Brian Branson and his wife decided to make the move to Hampshire to be nearer to their daughter, who lives in Twickenham. Yet after the sudden passing of his wife within a year of their move, Brian found himself looking to move once more.
After my wife passed away, my daughter invited me to live with her. As much as I love my daughter, I wanted to remain independent. Being all on my own was scary but I liked the idea of living in a retirement complex with other people around.
Brian moved to Hampshire Lakes, an Anchor development in the heart of Yateley. He decided on a spacious, two-bedroom apartment on the first floor.
I was one of the first people to move into Hampshire Lakes. It was an easy decision to choose an Anchor development over others; the fact they’re a not-for-profit provider, compared to some of their competitors, was a big selling point for me.
The inclusive, village-feel of Hampshire Lakes also helped seal the deal for Brian. With community central to the retirement development, there’s no shortage of activities for residents to enjoy:
Hampshire Lakes is a really close-knit community; there’s always someone to talk to and something to do so I spend a lot of time with my neighbours. There are some fantastic on-site facilities and as cooking isn’t my strong point, I especially love that there’s a bistro. A few other residents and I have dinner there together every Saturday night.
From Friday happy hour to themed dinner and drinks, I also enjoy attending regular events alongside my neighbours. I love the themed nights in particular; we once had a 60s-themed evening where I dressed up as Elvis Presley!
Brian is well-known in the Hampshire Lakes community among his neighbours. He added:
I have the nickname ‘odd job’ as I have a penchant for DIY; I’m often called upon to help with bits and pieces around people’s homes!
As well as creating new friendships, Brian has encouraged friends outside the development to make the move to Hampshire Lakes, including his sister-in-law after she too became widowed. He explained:
My sister-in-law was struggling with the upkeep of a four-bedroom house after she unfortunately lost her husband. She saw how much I was enjoying living at Hampshire Lakes and bought a place a couple of years after I did.
Beyond the development, Brian enjoys staying active, exploring neighbouring Yateley Lakes, playing golf and bowls with a local team.
Yateley is a lovely town with lots to explore and get involved in. I see my daughter once a week and I’m also just a short drive from London Heathrow Airport, which makes it convenient to visit my son who lives in Geneva.
Surrounded by stunning lakeside scenery, Hampshire Lakes is contemporary in design, with homes carefully crafted to a high specification. On-site amenities include a wellness centre and spa, swimming pool and bistro serving freshly prepared meals.
