Shamas shares his experience as a Business Administration apprentice
For National Apprenticeship Week Shamas Syed shares his experience of doing a Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship at Anchor.
What apprenticeship are you doing, how long for?
I am doing a Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship which lasts 18 months. As a Business Administrator apprentice, I work closely with anyone in Anchor that needs support. Currently I work with the Communications and Marketing Team.
How have you found your apprenticeship?
It has been good. The support I have received from colleagues and management has been really good. I like working at Anchor and the direct interaction with residents. I like the fact that the role I am doing has a direct impact on residents. It has been good also working alongside other apprentices and building relationships and friendships with them.
Have you faced any challenges or obstacles?
My confidence and professional skills have improved. It was quite daunting leaving school, going into the world of work and I felt ill equipped.
What are your career goals for the future?
I want to go into Digital Marketing so doing this apprenticeship has been great for me and I have really enjoyed doing it within the care sector. Ideally, I would like to stay here and do this.
Do you have advice for anyone considering an apprenticeship?
Definitely do it. There is a mix of skills you can gain. I have been having so much great experiences here, a few months back I didn’t know what I wanted to do. Working in the Communications and Marketing Team and other areas within Anchor, shadowing people has given me a huge insight into the world of work.
My sister has been asking me for advice on how to approach job interviews just because of the skills I have gained here. There are just things in school, like how to understand things around tax for example which you do not get taught. I am studying, learning and also earning at the same time now it’s great.
I chose to join as an Anchor apprentice as I thought college wasn’t for me. I have had the best time of my life in this past year with Anchor, I have been supported, understood and looked after by my manager and my team. My experience at Anchor has been amazing it has helped me thrive in life, the Apprenticeship Team and Riverside Training who support learners and employers with the training have also supported me so much.
