Care Assistant Career Progression At Anchor: A Q&A with Sarah Friedman
In Sarah’s blog, she explains what initially attracted her to the idea of working in care, and the skills she has developed to take the next step in her career.
1. Can you share your journey with Anchor and what care assistant training and development you did to progress into your current role?
When I first moved to the UK two years ago, one thing immediately caught my attention: the “elderly people crossing” road signs lining my street. I found them intriguing, as I’d never seen anything like this in the United States.
Soon after, I began noticing older people, accompanied by carers, walking along my road—a road shared with Mayflower Court - the care home where I now work. They always looked happy, often sharing a joke and off somewhere with purpose and it piqued my curiosity and sparked a desire to learn more about how care for older people is approached in the UK, and how I could contribute.
After taking a year to settle my family and establish roots in Southampton, I turned to online job boards with the specific goal of finding a job at Mayflower Court. Its proximity to my home and the care I witnessed daily made it an ideal fit. I applied for a carer role, started in September, and quickly fell in love with both the residents and the team. I was now off somewhere with purpose and sharing in those jokes.
Before moving to the UK, my background was in preschool special education, where creativity and a direct approach was integral to my work. These skills translated seamlessly into my role as a carer, and my enthusiasm and compassionate approach were soon recognised by my managers. They encouraged me to take on additional responsibilities as a Wellbeing Champion, which allowed me to contribute even more to the home.
When the opportunity to apply for the Customer Relations Manager position arose, my colleagues strongly encouraged me to pursue it. Their support, combined with my passion for the work, led me here—proudly serving as our home’s Customer Relations Manager.
And I even have business cards now!

2. What skills or experience have you gained here that prepared you for your current role?
Throughout my time with the organisation, I’ve gained a range of fantastic skills. Collaborating closely with residents, their families, and colleagues has strengthened my ability to communicate, build relationships, and empathise with others, which is essential for understanding the needs of prospective residents and their families.
My experience as a carer gave me a deep understanding of person-centred care, which helps me represent the home’s values and ensure we meet the expectations of new residents. As a Wellbeing Champion, I planned activities and events tailored to residents’ interests, learning to balance creativity with practical planning—skills I now apply to marketing strategies and customer engagement.
Collaborating with a supportive team taught me how to work effectively with others, delegate tasks, and step into leadership roles when needed. This has been invaluable in managing relationships and fostering teamwork in my current position. Additionally, being involved in the day-to-day operations of the home gave me insights that allow me to confidently oversee enquiries, give tours, and address concerns.

3. What duties of being a care assistant do you enjoy the most?
The opportunity to connect with people and make a meaningful difference in their lives. I love meeting new families, listening to their stories, and helping them navigate what can often be a challenging and emotional decision-making process. Being able to provide reassurance and guide them toward finding the best care for their loved ones is incredibly rewarding.
I also enjoy representing a home that I genuinely believe in. Knowing firsthand the dedication and compassion of the team and seeing the positive impact we have on residents' lives makes me proud to share our story with others.
Another aspect I cherish is the variety in my role. Whether it’s hosting tours, with the team to create a warm and welcoming environment or helping to plan events that showcase the amazing community we’ve built, every day brings something new and fulfilling.
Most of all, I love seeing the joy on the faces of residents and their families when they realise they’ve found a place that feels like home. It’s moments like these that remind me why I’m so passionate about what I do.

4. What inspired you to take on new challenges and take care worker progression routes?
I’ve always been someone who thrives on learning and embracing new opportunities. The encouragement from my colleagues and managers, who recognised my enthusiasm and potential, motivated me to step outside my comfort zone. Taking on roles like Wellbeing Champion allowed me to channel my creativity and develop new skills, which further fuelled my desire to grow.
Anchor has also been incredibly supportive throughout my career journey, including during one of the most challenging times of my life. I had to take three months off to care for my mother during her final days, and the compassion and understanding I received from Anchor during that period were remarkable. The organisation not only gave me the time I needed to be with my family but also offered unwavering emotional support. My managers and colleagues checked in on me regularly, ensuring I felt supported both personally and professionally. Knowing that my role was secure and that I had the full backing of my team made an incredibly difficult situation more manageable.
This experience deepened my appreciation for Anchor’s values and commitment to its people and confirmed this is where I want to be.
