Walking 88 miles in aid of Stroke Association
A Lincolnshire resident and housing association scheme manager has helped raise £9,250 following an 88 mile walk all the way from Nottingham to Mablethorpe.
Debbie Prince, who has been a Scheme Manager at Reverend Bill Baker Court Extra Care housing scheme in Sutton on Sea for nearly seven years, walked the 88 miles to increase awareness of the impacts of stroke in the run up to Stroke Awareness Month in May and raise much needed funds for Stroke Association.
Debbie joined a group of friends for the walk, one of whom came up with the idea for the initiative as his mum had a stroke when he was a young child. Each member of the group has been affected by strokes in some way including Debbie, who has a couple of friends who have had strokes.
The route took the group from Nottingham to Lincoln, Lincoln to Horncastle and then Horncastle to Mablethorpe totalling about 30 miles per day, ending on Good Friday. They completed the walk over three days and stayed in hotels overnight between treks.
Debbie is no novice to charity walks and completed the walk for The Stroke Association previously in 2019. Also called Mablethorpe’s Mrs Motivator, she is well known for her various charity fundraising efforts and has completed numerous marathons. She cheered her fellow walkers on along the way and even ran a big hill in Alford on day three, a challenge she completed three years ago and wanted to take on again.
She said:
I love motivating people and doing exercise. I just absolutely love doing challenges and raising money for charity. I really enjoyed completing this challenge again!
The group was thrilled to have smashed their fundraising target by raising over £9,000 for Stroke Association.
Debbie added:
Thank you to everyone for their support and generosity in helping us raise money for such an important cause and awareness of the symptoms of a stroke. My colleagues and residents at Reverend Bill Baker Court Extra Care housing scheme have supported me throughout this challenge.
