Manor House couple give romantic advice to young valentines

An older couple from Harrogate living in The Manor House have offered romantic advice to young couples celebrating Valentine’s Day this week.

Maurice and Muriel Carrick, who have been married for 62 years, said the secret to their marriage was to always love each other even though his job in the Navy had kept them apart for long spells.
Grandmother Muriel, 92, who has lived with Maurice, 87, at Anchor’s The Manor House in Cornwall Road since February last year, said: “Our most romantic day was our wedding day and since then every day together has been special. 

“Maurice was away a lot of the time but absence definitely makes the heart grow fonder. On the day he would return home, I would wonder how I would feel when he walked through the door but then I would tell him I loved him and I knew I had him.

“My advice to young couples is not to analyse everything too much and enjoy each other’s company.
“Valentine’s Day is a chance to show you care for someone you love and after 62 years of marriage we are still in love although in a quiet sort of a way.”
Maurice and Muriel, who were married in Christ Church in Wetherby Road, have two daughters and two grandsons.

The couple will be joining their friends at The Manor House for a Valentine’s evening on Thursday (13 February) where they will be served canapes and fizz at 4.30pm followed by an evening meal during they will be entertained by singer Karen Clegg.

The Manor House Manager Andrea Harley said the Valentine’s party was part of a packed programme of activities at the care home. 

She said: “This is such an exciting event. There will be lots of fun, colour and wonderful food all made from fresh seasonal ingredients. Older people have a life time of experience when it comes to love so it’s great Maurice and Muriel can offer younger couples advice.

“The party is part of The Manor House’s ongoing programme of interesting activities which aim to stimulate the residents physically and mentally.
“Such events are also a great occasion for residents to socialise with friends and their families.”
