Residents from a care home in Caterham were reaching for the stars and other exercises as part of a fun exercise routine on Friday.
Staff and older people living at Anchor’s Elizabeth Court care home in Grenadier Place took part in the 10 Today exercise routine as part of Care Home Open Day (CHOD) on Friday 28 June, along with thousands of care homes across the country.
10 Today is an exercise programme developed by Terry Keen, a resident living in Anchor’s Willow Glade in Reigate, and aimed at getting older people active in a bid to improve their health and reduce the chances of getting dementia.
The exercises were particularly fun for friends Raymond Hearn and Gwendoline Gadsby who both live at Elizabeth Court.
Other activities on the day included staff bringing in their pet dogs so that residents could make a fuss of the dogs, and the unveiling of a new Tovertafel which is a table on which interactive images are projected.
Other residents, including Margaret Warner and Phyllis Richards (pictured), took part in an arts and crafts class, painting designs on stones which will be displayed in the home. The regular class is run by volunteer Frances.
Home Manager Sue Guyon said: “It was a really fun day with lots of activities for the residents, and their guests.
“People don’t realise how we transform older people’s lives for the better here so Care Home Open Day is the chance for people to find out what a care home is really like.
“Our doors are always open to people but CHOD was an opportunity for the local community to visit us.”
