The Beeches Care home launches exercise programme for older people

A pioneering exercise regime aimed at older people is being launched in a care home in Leatherhead.

10 Today Terry KeenTerry Keen, 73, who has spearheaded the health campaign led by Anchor and Sport England, will launch the 10 Today exercise sessions at The Beeches in Fortyfoot Road – the first care home in the country to benefit from an exercise session personally supervised by Terry.

The residents from The Beeches will be joined by members of the local community for the 10 Today session which will be part of a wellness day of activities including smoothie taster sessions, hand massages and healthy baking classes with schoolchildren from Trinity School.

Previously Terry, a fitness instructor from Reigate, has toured retirement housing properties across England, encouraging older people to remain active by taking part in the 10-minute exercises.

A report by Anchor, in association with the think tank Demos, found that physical inactivity of older people will cost the NHS more than £1.3bn by 2030. The report also highlights how inactivity contributes to poorer physical health, cognitive decline, reduced emotional wellbeing and loneliness.

By taking part in 10 Today three times a week, older people can meet the 30 minutes of moderate physical activity a week target recommended by the Chief Medical Officer in the UK physical activity guidelines.
Terry said: “Inactivity in later life is an urgent issue that cannot be overlooked any longer.

“Everyone should have a chance to live life to the full, regardless of age. It’s imperative that our older generations are able to exercise in a way that suits their needs, to improve their wellbeing and reduce strain on the NHS, which is a lifeline for so many."

“10 Today provides a series of easy, accessible and enjoyable 10-minute videos, which can be done almost anywhere and at any time, in a group or alone, standing up or sitting down, and which can be adapted to different fitness levels.”

Michelle Daniels, Manager of The Beeches, said the residents and staff at the home were looking forward to the day.

She said: “We are thrilled Terry has chosen The Beeches as the first care home in the country to launch the 10 Today exercise."

“We know how exercise for all of our residents is important as it boosts their physical and mental wellbeing. We already organise regular exercise classes for our residents so this wellness day is an extension of this.”
