Firth House care home has been praised by care regulator

A care home in Selby has been classed as good by regulator the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Firth HouseStaff at Anchor’s Firth House in Firth Mews, Millgate, were celebrating this week after receiving the accolade.
The care home, which cares for 40 residents, was praised by the CQC under their new robust inspection process.

Care homes are now classed as either outstanding, good, requiring improvement or inadequate.
The CQC inspectors were particularly impressed with Firth House Manager Pearl Millen, stating the home was well-led and the service was caring and responsive to the residents’ needs.

Pearl said everyone at the care home was thrilled because they had worked so hard to maintain high standards of care.

She said: “We all know Firth House is a great place for older people to live but to be given such praise from the regulator is amazing.

“We are proud of the care we provide, of the meals which are made from fresh seasonal ingredients and of the wide variety of meaningful activities enjoyed by our residents.

“We welcome such rigorous inspections and clear ratings so older people and their families can see which homes are the best in the country.”

The CQC inspection report, which can be found on the regulator’s website, highlighted the high standards of care at Firth House, which included certain rooms used for reminiscence sessions being decorated as the residents would have remembered them, whether it’s the 1960s style office, the summer house with a grammar phone or the room decorated as a Second World War bunker which they would have remembered from when they were younger.

The inspectors highlighted the activities the care home staff had done as part of their work with the local community, such as the fundraising events held at Firth House.

Resident Laurence Bell, 92, who has lived at Firth House for 4 years, said: “It was no surprise to me that Firth House was classed as good.

“I love living here, at Firth House- – the staff are so friendly and will do anything for you, the food is amazing and such caring environment.”
