Local children go above and beyond to bring Christmas joy to The Ridings care home residents
Residents at The Ridings care home were recently joined by year 3 students from Dashwood Banbury Academy for some virtual Christmas fun.
The students joined up via Zoom for a whole host of activities, which included a Christmas quiz and festive Q&A with residents, getting the lowdown on how they will be spending Christmas this year.
Ahead of the virtual event, the students had also created homemade decorations for the home Christmas trees (including stain glass window designs, beautiful snowflakes and decoupage baubles) as well as personalized “envelopes of joy” for each resident, to let them know that their community was thinking of them during the festive season. The school also recorded video messages to residents, sharing their experiences of lockdown this year and send their Christmas wishes.
The Ridings staff member, Claire Blow, said:
The residents absolutely loved taking part in the virtual Christmas activities - it was fantastic that two groups were able to participate with us from their individual classrooms. It was very different to how we normally share our Christmas celebrations with Dashwood, though equally as important for our residents that we try and adapt during these times, so they feel connected to with their community.
As the Zoom call came to an end, the children joined residents in a countdown as the home’s Christmas tree lights were officially switched on.
Resident, Vera Smith, said:
It was marvellous that we can still see and talk to the children on our big television screen, especially when we can’t see them in our home at this time.
Dashwood teacher Annelise Gooch said:
Year 3 had such a lovely time connecting with everyone on Zoom. They loved the quiz and the Christmas lights, seeing you all made their day! Thank to you all the residents at The Ridings.
