Get ready for winter
As the days get shorter and temperatures begin to fall, it's important to think ahead and prepare your home and routine for the winter months.
A little planning now can help you avoid problems later and make the season more enjoyable.
Keep your home warm
Staying warm is important for our health and wellbeing, particularly as we get older.
- Check that your heating is working properly before you need it.
- Make sure radiators are not blocked by furniture.
- Close curtains in the evening to help keep heat in.
- Report any issues with heating, draughts, damp or mould as soon as possible.
- Keep a room thermometer if you can. Living rooms should ideally be around 18 to 21°C.
Stock up on essentials
Bad weather can sometimes make it harder to get out and about. Consider keeping a small supply of:
- Long-life food such as tinned goods, pasta and rice.
- Regular medications and prescriptions.
- Batteries for torches and radios.
- Basic first-aid supplies.
There's no need to overbuy but having a few essentials at home can give you peace of mind.
Stay safe outdoors
Winter weather can bring slippery paths and icy conditions.
• Wear sturdy shoes or boots with good grip.
• Take your time when walking outside.
• Use handrails where available.
• Consider carrying a mobile phone when you go out.
• Avoid unnecessary journeys if conditions are particularly poor.
Look after your health
Winter can bring coughs, colds and other seasonal illnesses.
- Keep active indoors where possible.
- Eat regular, healthy meals.
- Stay hydrated.
- Keep up-to-date with any vaccinations recommended by your healthcare provider.
- Seek medical advice if you feel unwell or have concerns about your health.
Check in on others
Winter can feel isolating for some people. A quick phone call, chat over a cup of tea or checking in on a neighbour can make a big difference. If you need support yourself, don't hesitate to speak to friends, family, neighbours or colleagues at your location.
Be prepared for emergencies
Keep important phone numbers somewhere easy to find, including:
- Family or friends.
- Your GP surgery.
- Utility providers.
- Your location manager.
Make sure your mobile phone is charged and consider keeping a torch handy in case of power cuts.
Need help?
If you notice problems such as a heating fault, a leak, damp and mould, or anything that could affect your safety or comfort at home, report it as soon as possible so support can be provided.
A little preparation today can help you stay safe, warm and well all winter long.
