Townend couple offer romantic advice to young valentines
An older couple from Keighley living in Townend care home has offered romantic advice to young couples celebrating Valentine’s Day this week.
Sheila and Barrie Saunders, who have been married for 67 years, said the secret to their marriage was to always love each other and having good communication between them.
Great grandmother, 86, who has lived at Anchor’s Townend Close care home in Victoria Road since August last year, said: “Our most romantic day was our wedding day and since then every day has been special.
“Valentine’s Day is a chance to show you care for someone you love and we are still in love after 67 years of marriage.”
Husband Barrie, who visits Sheila every day, said their marriage has lasted so long because they are soul mates.
He said: “We have always loved each other and have listened to each other and talked through problems together.
“My advice to young couples would be to be patient with each other and to have realistic expectations of your partner.”
The couple, who were married at Swindon Register Office, received a telegram from the Queen on their 60th wedding anniversary. Sheila and Barrie have four children, seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild with another one due within the next few weeks.
Townend Close Manager Sharen Mackie said everyone could benefit from the lessons older people had learnt in their relationships.
She said: “Older people have a lifetime of experience when it comes to love so it’s great Sheila and Barrie can offer younger couples advice.”
