Teal beck house couple give romantic advice to young valentines

An older couple from Otley currently living in Teal beck care home have offered romantic advice to young couples celebrating Valentine’s Day this week.

Moyra and Gerard McIver, who have been married for 65 years, said the secret to their marriage was to always be in love no matter what life throws at you.

Grandmother Moyra, 88, who has lived at Anchor’s Teal Beck House care home in Teal Beck Approach since last September, said: “We’ve enjoyed each other’s company since we met at a dance hall in Newcastle. It was love at first sight.

“Our most romantic day was our wedding day and since then every day has been special. We have always been best friends and have done things together, through thick and thin. Gerard visits me every day. Valentine’s Day is a chance to show you care for someone you love and we are still in love after number years of marriage.”

Moyra and Gerard, 90, who lives in an Anchor retirement property called The Laureates in Guiseley, were married at St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Felling, and had four children and have four grandchildren. The couple will be joining their friends at Teal Beck House for a Valentine’s afternoon tea on Friday (14 February).

Teal Beck House Manager Louise Bulcock said the Valentine’s party was part of a packed programme of activities at the care home. She said: “This is such an exciting event. There will be lots of fun, colour, and an afternoon tea for all to enjoy.

“Older people have a life time of experience when it comes to love so it’s great Moyra and Gerard can offer younger couples advice.

“The party is part of Teal Beck House’s ongoing programme of interesting activities which aim to stimulate the residents physically and mentally. Such events are also a great occasion for residents to socialise with friends and their families.”
