Beech Hall hydration project with NHS Leeds CCG
Beech Hall care home in Armley, Leeds is taking part in a national project with the NHS aiming to reduce hospital admissions linked to urinary tract infections (UTI) among older people.
Funded by the Health Minister, this project is nationally known as the “UTI Collaborative” and sees the residential care home work in conjunction with NHS Leeds CCG.
Staff at Beech Hall are benefiting from further hydration training and working with an Infection Prevention and Control Nurse and the Locality Lead Pharmacist. Together the health professionals are monitoring fluid intake charts, some of which residents complete themselves, to help aide understanding around how older people can remain sufficiently hydrated throughout the day.
The home will also be holding a Hydration Awareness session for people from the local community, where there will be information about the importance of hydration, the different ways to stay hydrated including different forms of hydration, and a range of different fluids for visitors to sample.
The aim of the initiative is to ensure older people remain sufficiently hydrated and by doing so, reduce the need for hospital admissions for reasons such as UTIs.
Home Manager Victoria Gudgin said of the project, “We were really pleased to be asked to work with NHS Leeds CCG on this project.
“Our staff and residents are enjoying participating and we hope that the work we are doing will help older people in Leeds and beyond to stay well.”
