Build a career in construction with Anchor
Juggling work with studying isn’t always easy, but at Anchor we appreciate how hands-on experience and qualifications complement each other and that’s why we support colleagues to continue studying while working with us.
In this blog Charlie, an Anchor Property Surveyor shares how he found working and completing a Level 4 HNC in Construction at the same time.
Name: Charlie
Job Title: Property Surveyor
Course: Level 4 HNC in Construction
What drew you to work for Anchor initially?
It was how professional the organisation came across and the values that Anchor has and displays. The opportunity to develop personally and professionally, was a big drawing point for me. I must say, it's been over a year since I've been here and I've enjoyed every step of it. It comes with it’s challenges, but Anchor has incredible support in place for anyone looking to balance work and studying.
How did you find studying alongside working at Anchor?
I'd already completed year one with my previous employer and joined Anchor just before the start of year 2. I had a lot of support from my Line Manager Kelly, she's been brilliant ever since I've been at Anchor.
I've been on reduced working hours, meaning I was out of business every Thursday. I balanced this by making sure that all the Location Managers and Scheme Managers knew that I was only on a four day working week and wouldn’t be contactable on a Thursday with being at university.
The support I've had from other Surveyors and my Line Manager has been brilliant, which has made the transition a lot easier.
What are you working towards now that you've completed your course?
I'd definitely like to further develop more - my knowledge and my skills especially around residential social housing. Short Project Manager courses for example - especially since you've got all the support mechanisms in place at Anchor.
Did anything stand out in Anchor’s support process?
I have been down to the London offices a couple of times which is really insightful. There's also a lot of coffee mornings and breakfast mornings that the property team put on to talk about repairs and planned works. The support mechanism has to be in place between the person who is doing the course and the colleagues around them.
I'm back on a on a 5 day working week, but can say it's definitely worthwhile joining Anchor if you are studying, the experiences over the last couple of years have been amazing and I’ve gained so many new skills and met so many brilliant people.
At Anchor you can expect all the support you need to make the most out of your abilities and look forward to a secure future, whether that’s completing a qualification like Charlie or other learning and development opportunities. We provide you with all the skills and experience to be your very best, with plenty of scope to prove your talents and fulfil your potential.
