Mayor of Hackney visits Walrond House mixed residential community to view new affordable homes

England’s largest provider of specialist housing and care for people in later life Anchor Hanover, welcomed the Mayor of Hackney, Councillor Philip Glanville to its new Walrond House development in Newington Green, to showcase the new affordable homes created locally. 

Walrond House, a joint venture between Hill, an award-winning 5* house builder and Anchor Hanover, was commended by Mayor Glanville for the delivery of over half (56%) affordable homes on site, exceeding council requirements for new developments.  

The development, named after the famous Afro-Caribbean Harlem Renaissance writer and journalist, Eric D Walrond, who lived locally until his death in 1966, exemplifies regeneration at its best. It comprises 28 affordable rent apartments for older people who are likely to be downsizing (with 100% nomination rights to Hackney Council), alongside 12 shared ownership and 32 outright sale, non-age restricted apartments. It also includes the regeneration of three retail units and a fantastic new resource centre to provide a valued resource for the community. 

Nick Hodgskin, Senior Development Manager at Anchor Hanover provided Mayor Glanville and Councillor Yvonne Maxwell, the Mayoral Advisor for Older People, with a socially distanced tour of the development, stopping by a recently installed commemorative plaque which celebrates Anchor Hanover’s staff’s efforts during Covid-19. 

Mayor Glanville commented: “It was wonderful to visit Walrond House and see the vision for the intergenerational residential community come to life. Anchor Hanover has built high quality, affordable homes and a new Council community resource centre that will help meet the needs of the residents within Hackney now and in years to come.”
